The state of Alabama has recently undergone some severe weather conditions that has damaged and even destroyed thousands of residential and corporate structures.
For those storm survivors, hiring the right rebuilding contractor is the first step down the road to recovery.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency advises consumers who need repair work done quickly to properly screen contractors before hiring them. The federal agency points out that consumers who have recently suffered a natural disaster are sometimes targets of unscrupulous business practices.
“Homeowners should look for a contractor with a prove track record who readily offers client references,” said FEMA officials in a press release. “Most service providers in the building industry are honest, but it’s sad to say that disasters sometimes attract scam artists.”
By hiring licensed and insured contractors, Alabama storm survivors can avoid any additional problems.
FEMA offers some general tips for hiring rebuilding contracts:
· Check references
· Research contractors
· Ask for proof of insurance
· Get a written estimate
· Get guarantees in writing
· Insist on a written contract
· If required, obtain a local building permit
· Pay by check, not cash
· If necessary, cancel a contract in the proper manner
· Make final payments only after the work is completed
Securing a properly licensed and qualify contractor will not only save you money in the long run but will ensure that the necessary measures were taken. It is also recommended to research whether or not the contract work is covered under your home insurance policy.
